Vision in Business
In today’s show, Simon and Michael talk about vision, goals, direction and planning. These topics are linked but not the same. Sometimes people don’t have a clear grasp of the differences between their goals and their vision, and clarity is an essential element of vision.
20:20 Vision Cycling London to Paris
Vision in business and In life, if our vision isn’t clear if there’s something wrong with our eyes and we can’t see where we’re going, then we’re going to end up having problems. It’s the same for a businessperson. They need a clear vision of where they’re going to be sure they keep heading in the right direction.
But the vision isn’t just about what happens in the business, though of course, that is important. Michael and Simon also talk about vision boards, and Simon shares his experience of a board he created with his family. Having a successful business is not necessarily the vision. For many entrepreneurs, business success is about allowing them to fulfil other visions. Listen in to hear what Simon had on his vision board and how much of it he has already achieved.
Beyond Vision
Having a clear vision is essential. If you don’t know what you want to achieve, whether that’s in terms of e.g. a business of a certain size, or a house of a certain size. Whether that’s the number of employees or the number of cars in your driveway. Or something completely different to any of those. Until you know what your vision is, you can’t start planning how to achieve it. You have no direction, no purpose, so no way to plan your route.
As Simon explains, a vision needs to be set for a specific time in the future. By that time, three years or five years or ten years from now, you will have … And then to start planning how you’re going to get there. What do you need to put in place? What are the stages to go through to reach your destination?

Vision in Practice
Vision In Business calibrated with your realistic thoughts, Michael and Simon talk about the time they cycled from London to Paris, a three-hundred-mile challenge, and
what they learnt from doing it. The whole adventure becomes a practical lesson in establishing vision and seeing it through. Despite the rain, the headwinds, the unexpected steepness of the hills. Every obstacle on the way could have been an excuse to give up, to turn back. Did they? Or did they focus on the destination, their vision of sitting on white garden furniture under the Eiffel Tower with a beer in hand.
A clear vision provides impetus to carry you through the tough times. You may be feeling discouraged, or disheartened. You may be feeling victorious and celebratory. But keep the vision clearly in your sights. While your feelings, whatever they are, are valid and have their own usefulness, don’t allow them to derail you.
To Recap
Simon and Michael share many lessons with you, from their first-hand experience, of creating a clear vision; planning to turn that vision into reality; create a route map to will carry you from where you are now, to where you want to be. There are tips on mindset, and how to maintain a forward trajectory even when things are going more slowly, or there are more obstacles, than you foresaw.
As always, Michael and Simon are here to share practical information and tips, along with inspiration and motivation for anyone who is, or aspires to be, an entrepreneur.
